Engagement Rings Trigger Crimes of the Heart
Engagement rings can be pricey, and one man bit off more than he could swallow committing the ultimate crime of the heart.
The story of Simon Hooper is one that shows the lengths love can go to. In 2006, the man walked into a jewellery store stating his girlfriend was pregnant and that he was eager to marry her. Checking out the engagement rings, he realised he couldn't afford the £2,000 price tag. Whereas other men might go away and think about saving up some cash over a period of time, or even look elsewhere for more affordable engagement rings, Simon Hooper did a remarkable thing – he swallowed one of the engagement rings in an act of desperation.
Engagement Rings Hard to Stomach
Dubbed by the papers as 'lovelorn' his story hit the headlines after police confirmed suspicions he'd swallowed one of the engagement rings in the jewellery shop after undertaking an X-ray – the diamond ring was clearly visible inside his stomach. Although it was clear at the time to the shopkeeper in the jewellery store in Dorset that Mr Hooper had swallowed one of his engagement rings, the man flatly denied the accusation to the police.
Police Didn't Swallow Thief's Denial
Although the X-ray undeniably showed the culprit had swallowed one of the engagement rings, police had to wait for three days for the platinum diamond engagement ring to pass through Mr Hooper's body as nature finally took its course. Whether or not the the man's intended would still want an engagement ring that had passed through her lover's intestines and bowels is another matter, but once the evidence had been cleaned, the man was charged with theft.
Engagement Rings Inspired Crime of the Heart
It has to be one of the most bizarre thefts, but demonstrates how affairs of the heart can trigger some people into doing extreme crimes of the heart. He was jailed for 12 weeks for swallowing one of the engagement rings, which the shopkeeper said he took when his back was turned to get more engagement rings to show the man. Mr Hooper had the ring in his hand one minute, but when the shop assistant returned, Mr Hooper claimed he had returned the ring to him. The platinum Princess Cut engagement ring was valued at around £1,750. After a search of the man revealed nothing, the shopkeeper concluded he must have swallowed the ring. He said Mr Hooper was eating peppermint creams to perhaps help wash the ring down.
The shop owner added that he had to sell the engagement ring to trade as customers were put off by the story of 'where it had been'.
