Engagement Rings and Promise Rings
Engagement rings are one way of saying to the world you are committed to one person only, but in America the promise ring takes things one step further announcing to the world you won't have sex before marriage.
Engagement rings and wedding rings are the traditional way for couples to announce their relationship status to the world. Engagement rings offer the opportunity to add some sparkle next to the more traditional simple wedding band. Engagement Rings – The Alternative
For some Americans wearing promise rings is the in-thing. Wearing engagement rings and wedding rings has a moral overtone – engagement rings suggest you are committing yourself to the rules and regulations of the institute of marriage. Engagement rings say to the world you belong to one other person. But promise rings take the idea of morality to an altogether more extreme place. Promise rings do the opposite of engagement rings – rather than saying you are committed to another, they say you are committed to nobody. Promise rings are particularly appealing to the Republican right in America that values conservatism, they symbolize the vow not to have sex until married.
The Promise Ring Controversy
UK comedian Russell Brand caused a stir in America presenting the MTV Video Music Awards. Although most people don't take issues with engagement rings and what they symbolise, promise rings have been mocked by some. Brand joked about the Jonas Brothers who wear promise rings to tell the world they are chaste. And Jordin Sparks, winner of American Idol added fuel to the fire by standing up for the Jonas Brothers, endorsing promise rings because not everybody 'wants to be a slut'. Engagement rings, wedding rings and promise rings all make strong statements about somebody's relationship status. But the fact Brand mocked promise rings has triggered a larger debate about morality and relationships in the States. As a comedian however, some might see it as his duty to mock such things – after all comedians have been joking about the institute of marriage since time began. Without engagement rings and wedding rings, there'd be no mother-in-law jokes!
