Engagement Rings – The Jane Austen Effect
It seems Britain's women obsesses with all things Jane Austen every time there's a new TV adaptation – is it because our obsession with marriage proposals, engagement rings and romance is still as keen now as it was in Austen's day?
'Reader, I married him...' It's perhaps one of the most famous lines in literary history. And one that explains the massive appeal of the novels of Bronte and Austen. Bronte's Jane Eyre is much loved, but it seems Austen is the favourite when it comes to TV adaptations. Although novels such as Pride and Prejudice are about more than just romance, readers are still willing the heroes of the novel to turn up with engagement rings and to rescue the heroines. Marriage is very much the equivalent of a happily-ever-after ending in Pride and Prejudice. And the whole nation was urging Colin Firth on in the 1995 BBC adaptation to whisk out the engagement ring and propose. In fact, Mr Darcy is central to the appeal of Austen. Many women dream of someone wealthy, intelligent and passionate to offer them engagement rings with the promise of marriage – what makes Darcy different is his relationship with Liz Bennett is a meeting of minds as well as hearts.
The Power of Mr Darcy
The scene where Colin Firth walked out of a lake, his wet shirt clinging, sent ripples of excitement across the female viewing public in the UK. And Mr Darcy became many women's Prince Charming. Engaged women would consider throwing their own engagement rings aside for Mr Darcy. Austen has endured over the ages and adaptations of her book have joined films of her life in recent years, with Pride and Prejudice topping the Penguin books 'we cannot live without' poll. Whether you are single, wearing engagement rings or have been married for 50 years, it seems Austen still speaks to the romantic in all of us.
Engagement Rings, Wedding Bells and Romance
But it isn't just readers longing for her heroes to do the right thing and offer engagement rings to her heroines, the allure of Austen's writing lies in her sparkling, clever dialogue and use of irony. As Professor Janet Todd, an editor of Austen's works, told the BBC: “It combines wish fulfilment with a sense of the unlikelihood of it happening. There is always a modification to the romantic ending which points us back to real life.” Despite the fact many fans long for the promise of engagement rings and marriage proposals in Austen's novels, there are some critics too. Some say she ignored some pressing issues of her day – poverty, war, corruption - and that although charming, her novels lack guts. Austen is more preoccupied with the need to find a husband and wear engagement rings it seems then with the wild passion and darkness seen in the work of her peers, the Bronte sisters.
